In the first half of 2024, California's BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) registrations continued to lead the United States, with a cumulative market penetration rate of BEVs reaching 21.4%, significantly higher than the national average of 7.5%. California's BEV sales account for one-third (33%) of the total pure electric vehicle sales in the United States.

Furthermore, after six months of decline, in the second quarter of 2024, California's pure electric vehicle market share rose from 20.9% in the first quarter of 2024 to 21.9%, while the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) market share is expected to remain stable at 3.4% for the year.

In the second quarter of this year, California registered approximately 116,306 new plug-in vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%. Rechargeable vehicles accounted for 25.1% of the total vehicle market share, setting a new record, but only slightly higher by 0.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

Among them, the registration volume of pure electric vehicles (BEV) was 101,443 units, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%, with a market share of 21.9%, an increase of 0.1 percentage points year-on-year. The registration volume of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) decreased by 1.6% year-on-year to 14,863 units, with a market share of 3.2%, which is consistent with the same period last year. In the second quarter, the state's hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) registrations jumped to 13.2%.

In the first half of 2024, the total sales volume of pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles in California accounted for 38% of the market share. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles (gasoline and diesel) accounted for 62% of the registrations.

Among them, the Tesla Model Y remains the top-selling electric vehicle model; other electric vehicle brands such as Rivian and Hyundai are striving to catch up. It is worth mentioning that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has become the third most popular pure electric vehicle in California. At the same time, the Rivian R1S is now the best-selling large pure electric SUV in the state, with sales exceeding models such as the Lexus TX and the Cadillac Escalade. The Tesla Cybertruck has made a good start, ranking in the top 12 in sales.
