German automotive parts supplier ElringKlinger announced plans to invest $40.3 million to build a new battery module and system factory in Easley, Pickens County, northwestern South Carolina, USA, which will bring 115 job opportunities to the local area.

ElringKlinger plans to mainly produce contact system products for battery modules and systems at the new factory and intends to expand the factory into a battery center for the US market.

In the first phase, the new factory will cover an area of 21,000 square meters and will have additional space for expansion. ElringKlinger plans to gradually expand this base to make it its battery manufacturing center for the North American market. The battery factory is scheduled to start production in mid-2025. After starting production, ElringKlinger will first produce battery contact systems for an unnamed launch customer in Pickens County.

The company chose to build a factory in South Carolina because the area is centrally located between Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, and is also a major automotive production center in the United States. In addition, "prestigious universities such as Clemson University ensure a high level of qualification in the regional labor market, especially in the field of technology."

"The new factory is the next step in ElringKlinger's implementation of the SHAPE30 transformation strategy. The US market generally offers tremendous potential for electric vehicle applications, and we have already received the first large-volume series nomination," said CEO Thomas Jessulat, who highly values the South Carolina market in the United States, which will become the best starting point for the company's American battery center.

ElringKlinger is headquartered in Germany and focuses on two growth markets: the electrification of mobility and the development of the hydrogen economy. The company has positioned itself in these two markets at an early stage based on its core competencies - cutting-edge battery and fuel cell technology, engine-related parts and components, and automotive chassis, etc. The company has 44 production bases worldwide, with a product range that includes lightweight components, battery and fuel cell technology, electric drive units, drive parts, gaskets, shielding systems, stamping and forming metal parts and related components, transmission control boards, high-performance plastic parts, and tool technology, etc.
