Following its launch earlier this year, UK-based Protean Electric can confirm that its all-new ProteanDrive Generation 5 (Gen 5) in-wheel motor (IWM) has completed its full validation program and is now capable of delivering an industry-leading peak torque of 1500 Nm in an 18-inch wheel with an integrated inverter.

Protean Electric announces that its Gen 5 ProteanDrive IWM (Pd18 Gen5) has completed its extensive integrated validation program, covering all applicable legislation, regulations, and OEM standards for the IWM. In this process, Protean tested over 80 IWMs, running through 64 test programs.

The Pd18 Gen5 is developed and validated for mainstream automotive applications, meeting the durability requirements of 15 years and 300,000 km. Protean has also validated all environmental durability requirements for IWMs, such as wading, pothole impact, and other harsh conditions encountered in the wheel.

The team has designed the Gen 5 Pd18 IWM with a modular configuration, allowing for faster development of new product variations at lower risk. This includes offering integrated and detached inverters, with 400Vdc lead products available now, and 800Vdc products expected by the end of 2024.

Protean showcased its products at the Cenex Expo 2024 in the UK from September 4-5, including the compact and lightweight ProteanMotor Pm18 – 800V, which delivers 110kW and 1500Nm of torque, alongside the 800V SiC TwinverterTM, a 500kW inverter configured as dual 250kW inverters capable of 650Arms phase current and 98.5 percent peak efficiency.

The IWM is produced by Protean's manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China, with IATF 16949 certification. Protean currently works with a range of OEMs and aftermarket applications and has the capability to scale growth as the application becomes more popular and versatile.

Protean Electric, with 15 years of IWM development experience and a team of over 700 developers, designed, tested, and manufactured the Pd18 Gen5. The company received financial support from the UK government last year, with the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) allocating £11 million to 12 automotive projects, including one for Protean to develop "lightweight and novel In-Wheel Motors" for OEMs. Protean Electric is currently owned by Bedeo, a UK-based EV supplier and manufacturer, which acquired it from the Chinese Evergrande subsidiary, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), in November 2021.
